The Valley of the Giants: The Hike That Kept Calling Me Back

Some hikes leave footprints behind. Others stay with you long after you leave the trail.

The Valley of the Giants was one of those places for me.

Pull out your inner child, dig deep, and take the long winding path that leads to the hidden world know as the Valley of the Giants. That is, if you can make it that far.

Tucked away along the North Country Trail in Northern Michigan, the Valley of the Giants almost feels like a place that isn’t meant to be found easily. The trail leading to its twists through quiet forests, narrow paths, bubbling creeks, wooden bridges, and towering pines that seem to stretch endlessly into the sky.

The first time I attempted this hike, I truly didn’t know what to expect.

As my son and I drove down an old side road and turned onto a rough two-track searching for our group, I remember wondering how many people even knew this place existed. I felt like we were driving toward a secret hidden deep within the woods.

And honestly, it felt magical from the very beginning.

The trail itself was much longer and more difficult than I imagined. Some parts were narrow and uneven, and watching your footing quickly became important. But even through the exhaustion, there was so much beauty surrounding us.

Every turn seemed to reveal something new.

Small bridges crossed over clear streams. Sunlight filtered through the trees in golden streaks. Frogs leaped through the brush, birds echoed through the forest, and at one point, we even came across a snake resting along the trail.

The deeper we walked into the forest, the more it felt like stepping into another world.

By the time we reached the resting area, only half of our group continued on toward the Giants. I had fully intended to make it all the way that first time, but the trail had already pushed me further than I expected. Completely exhausted, I made the difficult decision to turn back.

Even though I never reached the Valley that day, I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterward.

Something about the trail stayed with me.

Maybe it was the mystery of not finishing. Maybe it was the feeling of knowing something incredible was still waiting deeper in the woods. Whatever it was, I knew I wanted to come back someday and try again.

A few months later, I finally did.

Returning to The Trail

This time, my friend Kelli and I returned determined to finish what I had started.

The second hike felt different. I still noticed the long stretches of trail and the physical challenge of the journey, but this time I felt more prepared for it. Instead of focusing on how far we still had to go, I found myself slowing down and appreciating everything around me.

And eventually, after all the winding trails and miles beneath our feet, we made it!

Standing among the giant white pines felt almost unreal.

The trees towered over us in complete silence, their massive trunks carrying centuries of history within them. There was something grounding about being there – something peaceful and humbling all at once. After thinking about this place for so long, finally reaching it felt less like finishing a hike and more like closing a chapter I wasn’t ready to let go of.

Some places leave an imprint on you long after you leave them behind.

The Valley of the Giants reminded me that not every journey is meant to be completed the first time. Sometimes life asks us to come back stronger, slower, and more prepared for what is waiting ahead.

And sometimes, the hikes that challenge us the most become the ones we never forget.
