There are some places that become more than just destinations. They become part of our story.

For me, one of those places is the Lumberman’s Monument near Oscoda, Michigan.
The first time I visited was three years ago when my husband and I had just gotten together. He took me there to show me one of his favorite spots, and it quickly became one of mine too. Since then, I’ve returned several times, and recently I had the chance to take my oldest son there when he came to visit. Sharing a place that holds so many memories made the trip even more special.
A Northern Michigan Treasure
Nestled high above the Au Sable River, Lumberman’s Monument offers some of the most beautiful views in Northern Michigan. The overlook provides breathtaking scenery where you can take in the river, surrounding forest, and the peaceful beauty that makes this area so special.

One thing visitors should know before they go – there are a lot of stairs! The long staircase takes you down toward the river and gives you an opportunity to experience the area up close. The climb back up can be a workout, but the views along the way make it worthwhile.
Stepping Back into Michigan’s Logging History
One of my favorite parts of the monument is the way it brings Michigan’s logging history to life.
As you walk through the exhibits, you’ll find recreated lumberjack camp scenes, historic tools, old cooking stoves, and displays showing what life was like for the hardworking men who helped build Michigan’s lumber industry.
The replica bunkhouse and camp displays help visitors imagine what everyday life was like for the lumberjacks who spent long winters working in the forests of Northern Michigan.
The old wood-burning stoves, barrels, camp kitchen displays, and lumberjack exhibits make history feel real, rather than something you simply read about in a book.

Hiking Trails and Beautiful Scenery
If you enjoy hiking, you’ll love the trails around Lumberman’s Monument.
The pathways wind through towering pine trees and offer stunning views of the river below. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a peaceful walk in nature, there is something here for everyone.
One of the things I love most is simply slowing down and taking in the sounds of the forest. It’s a place where you can leave your worries behind for a little while and just enjoy the beauty around you.
don’t Forget the Gift Shop
Before leaving, be sure to stop by the visitor center and gift shop!
You’ll find souvenirs, gifts, books, and local items that make wonderful keepsakes from your visit. It’s a fun way to remember your trip and support one of Northern Michigan’s most interesting historical sites.
Why this place means so much to me
What makes Lumberman’s Monument special isn’t just the history, the trails, or the beautiful views – It’s the memories.
It’s remembering my husband taking me there when we first got together. It’s returning a couple years later and sharing the experience with my oldest son. It’s standing at the overlook and realizing that some places never lose their magic.

If you’re ever near Oscoda, I highly recommend adding Lumberman’s Monument to your list of places to visit. Whether you’re interested in history, hiking, photography, or simply enjoying the beauty of Northern Michigan, it’s a destination that offers a little bit of everything.
And if you’re like me, it may become one of those places you find yourself returning to again and again.
One of the things I love most about Northern Michigan is that there is always another beautiful place waiting to be discovered. While Lumberman’s Monument holds a special place in my heart, another favorite spot my husband introduced me to is the Au Sable Highbanks Overlook.
With breathtaking views of the Au Sable River and miles of scenic beauty, it’s another destination that captures everything I love about this area. If you’re planning a trip to Oscoda, I highly recommend visiting both locations.

Northern Michigan is full of unforgettable places, but Lumberman’s Monument will always be one of my favorites.
